Over the 12-month period ending in March 2023, compensation costs for civilian workers increased by 4.8%, while wages and salaries increased by 5.0% and benefit costs increased by 4.5%. Compensation costs for private industry workers increased by 4.8% over the same 12-month period, with wages and salaries increasing by 5.1% and benefit costs increasing by 4.3%. Inflation-adjusted private wages and salaries increased by 0.1% over the 12 months ending in March 2023, while inflation-adjusted benefit costs declined by 0.6%. Compensation cost increases ranged from 4.3% for management, professional, and related occupations to 6.0% for service occupations. Compensation costs for state and local government workers increased by 4.9% over the 12-month period ending in March 2023, with wages and salaries increasing by 4.7% and benefit costs increasing by 5.0%.
