Griha Jyoti scheme

In a significant move aimed at providing relief to the citizens during a time of rising electricity prices, Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently announced the “Griha Jyoti” scheme. Under this well-intentioned program, households in the state will receive free electricity up to a maximum of 200 units. This initiative not only offers light to homes but also showcases the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the people. Let’s explore the details of the scheme and its potential impact on the lives of the beneficiaries.

Scheme Inclusion and Government Order: Beneficiaries under the existing Bhagya Jyoti/Kutira Jyoti Yojana and Amruta Jyoti Yojana, which are currently in force, have been included under the Griha Jyoti Yojana. The announcement was made through Government Order No: Energy 164/PSR/2023, dated 05.06.2023, in Bangalore.

Key Features of the Griha Jyoti Scheme:

  1. Maximum Consumption Limit: The scheme allows for a maximum consumption limit of 10 percent on the monthly average consumption of each consumer, based on the consumption for FY 2022-23. This limit is capped at 200 units per month per household.
  2. Free Electricity Bill: Under the scheme, eligible households will receive free electricity bill amounts, equivalent to their consumption within the prescribed limits. For consumers exceeding the 200 units threshold, the government has given administrative approval to pay the full electricity bill.
  3. Implementation and Conditions: The Griha Jyoti scheme is scheduled to be implemented from July 2023, with the following conditions applicable to bills issued from August 2023 onwards: a. Applicability: The scheme is applicable only to household electricity connections, excluding commercial purposes. b. Meter Reading and Calculation: Monthly meter readings will be taken to calculate the total electricity consumption for each month. c. Net Bill Issuance: The eligible amount of electricity used by households will be deducted from the bill, and the net bill will be issued to the customer. d. Zero Bill: Customers falling within the eligible unit/amount threshold will receive a zero bill. e. Application Process: Customers interested in availing the scheme’s benefits must apply through the Seva Sindhu Portal. f. Aadhaar Linkage: Mandatory linking of each beneficiary’s Customer ID/Account ID with Aadhaar is required. g. Inclusion of Existing Yojanas: Beneficiaries of Bhagya Jyoti/Kutira Jyoti Yojana and Amruta Jyoti Yojana will now come under the Griha Jyoti Yojana.

The Griha Jyoti scheme is a commendable initiative by the Karnataka(India) government to provide free electricity up to 200 units per month to households in the state. This program aims to alleviate the burden of increasing electricity prices and ensure that citizens have access to essential services. By incorporating existing yojanas under the Griha Jyoti scheme, the government has extended its support to a broader segment of the population. As we move forward, let us embrace this scheme and make prudent use of electricity, allowing the light of happiness to prevail over the darkness of troubles.
