Governor Abbott Urges Expansion of School Choice Legislation to Empower Parents and Students

Governor Greg Abbott expressed his support for pivotal school choice legislation currently under consideration in the Texas Legislature. In a statement released today, Governor Abbott emphasized the importance of empowering parents to choose the best educational path for their children. He highlighted that a majority of Texans, from diverse backgrounds across the state, are in favor of expanding school choice.

Governor Abbott compared the versions of the school choice bill, noting that the Senate’s version would make approximately 5.5 million students eligible, while the House’s version proposed last week would make about 4 million students eligible. However, the latest House version, released over the weekend, would only apply to approximately 800,000 students. Additionally, this version provides less funding for special education students compared to the original House version of the Senate bill. Furthermore, it denies school choice to low-income families who may greatly benefit from expanded educational options for their children.

Expressing his concerns, Governor Abbott stated that the latest version of the school choice bill does not offer significant opportunities for meaningful school choice. He made it clear that he would veto the bill if it were to reach his desk. Instead, he urged legislators to consider the original House version of the Senate bill as a starting point for House-Senate negotiations, as it provides a more meaningful approach to school choice.

Governor Abbott noted that support for school choice has been growing among House members throughout the legislative session. He also highlighted the potential elimination of the STAAR test if school choice becomes a reality, which has attracted additional legislators. He expressed optimism that modifications can be made to the original House version of the Senate bill to garner more support and bridge the divide with the Senate. Governor Abbott emphasized that the time and effort invested in this process are crucial for parents and their children.

The Governor reassured that he and his staff will continue to work diligently with the legislature to achieve the goal of expanding school choice. However, he made it clear that failure to broaden the scope of school choice, aligning it closer to the Senate version or the original House version of the Senate bill, may require special sessions. Governor Abbott emphasized that parents and their children deserve nothing less than meaningful school choice options.
