In a troubling incident, unknown assailants in Burma launched an attack on an ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) convoy, which was under military escort. The attack occurred just ahead of the ASEAN Leaders’ Summit and has raised serious concerns about the escalating violence and instability in the region. The assailants targeted the convoy, further highlighting the regime’s continued violence and disregard for the rule of law.

The United States has expressed deep concern over the attack, emphasizing the need for the military regime in Burma to adhere to its commitments under the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus. This includes putting an end to the violence and ensuring unrestricted access for humanitarian assistance. The incident has underscored the regime’s failure to fulfill its obligations, jeopardizing the well-being and safety of the Burmese people.

The U.S. Department Spokesperson, Matthew Miller, called on Burma’s military regime to take immediate and meaningful steps to implement the Five-Point Consensus. Additionally, he urged the regime to respect the democratic aspirations of the people, who have demonstrated their strong opposition to living under military rule. The military regime is reminded of its obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly the protection of diplomatic personnel and civilians.

The attack on the AHA Centre convoy is a stark reminder of the deteriorating situation in Burma. It highlights the urgent need for the military regime to engage in genuine dialogue and work towards long-term inclusive and democratic governance.  As investigations into the attack continue, the international community remains vigilant in monitoring the situation in Burma. Efforts will be intensified to hold the perpetrators accountable and ensure the safety of humanitarian missions operating in the region. The attack serves as a tragic reminder of the challenges faced by the Burmese people and the crucial role that concerted global action plays in restoring stability and promoting human rights in the country.
